Job Search Basics - Part 2: The Best Places to Find Your Next Opportunity
This blog post is continuation of Job Search Basics - Part 1: Resume Preparation. If you haven't read it yet, I suggest you to check it out.
In the previous post we have covered on how to prepare a good resume. In this post I will share you some information and tips on where to find opportunities.
Start with Your Connections
The first and easiest step is to leverage your network. Reach out to friends, cousins, and relatives who are working in or closely connected to the field you're targeting. While this approach may not work for everyone, it can save you significant time and effort in your job search.
Remember, connections matter. Building and maintaining a strong network is crucial, as it can open doors to opportunities you might not find elsewhere. Invest time in cultivating professional relationships, they can make a big difference in your career journey.
LinkedIn has become somewhat like another Instagram, but it remains the leading platform for professional networking. There are thousands of jobs listed on LinkedIn, but most job postings already have hundreds of applications by the time you apply. This makes it crucial for your profile and resume to stand out. One technique some people use is applying for jobs posted within the last 24 hours.
Additionally, don’t just apply for jobs on LinkedIn, focus on growing your network. Connect with people who share similar interests or those already working at organizations you’re interested in joining. Reach out to ask for referrals. While many may ignore such messages, some will respond.
When messaging, keep it professional and polite. Include the link to the job opening, if applicable, explain why you’re interested in the company, and highlight how your skills align with the job description. Don’t forget to attach your resume for their reference.
Building connections and seeking referrals can significantly improve your chances of landing the right opportunity.
Instahyre

If you are an experienced professional, Instahyre can be a great option. Based on your skills, Instahyre provides an InstaScore and suggests jobs that match your experience and profile. Your profile will also be visible to recruiters.
While similar to LinkedIn, Instahyre has a smaller user base. However, it’s an excellent platform for finding jobs, as the chances of getting recruiter calls are higher compared to LinkedIn.
Naukri
Naukri is one of the oldest players in the job search domain, with a vast number of job postings. However, the platform also has its share of spam and fraudulent listings, so caution is necessary.
To maximize your chances, complete your Naukri profile thoroughly. Add all your skills and experience, as recruiters often filter candidates in bulk. Ensure your profile is up-to-date and includes the right keywords to match job requirements.
Naukri also offers a feature called NVites, where recruiters or companies send invites to apply if your skills match their criteria.
A useful tip for Naukri is to update your profile daily. Profiles updated recently get a “profile updated recently” badge, which can grab the attention of recruiters. You don’t need to make major changes simply re-upload your resume daily, and it will suffice.
Lastly, don’t fall for tricks by Naukri salespeople pressuring you to spend money on premium job search services. With a strong profile and consistent updates, you can attract opportunities without additional expenses.
Wellfound
Wellfound (formerly AngelList Talent) is a job search platform focused on startups and tech companies. It offers a variety of opportunities, including full-time, part-time, and freelance roles, along with options for remote work.
One of the standout features of Wellfound is its global reach, providing access to job postings from companies worldwide. If you're specifically looking for remote positions, Wellfound is an excellent choice as many startups prefer remote first setups.
Additionally, Wellfound emphasizes transparency, with many job postings showing salary ranges and equity options upfront. This makes it a good choice if you're looking to work in innovative, fast-paced startup environments.
RemoteOK
Looking for global remote jobs? RemoteOK is a great platform for finding remote opportunities with companies worldwide. It features a wide range of job postings across industries and skill levels. Less Popular Option: Reddit
Reddit is primarily a social networking platform, but it can also be a valuable resource for job seekers. There are many subreddits related to specific industries and job fields where people actively discuss their careers, job environments, and hiring experiences.
By exploring these subreddits, you can gather insights and potentially connect with individuals who have posted about their job openings. If someone seems relevant, you can directly message them to ask for a referral.
While this approach may not be as direct as other platforms, Reddit’s community-based discussions can offer valuable opportunities for networking and gaining job leads.
